35 Years of Commitment: A New Campaign and Governance Aligned with Today’s Challenges
FAVORIBookmarkAs the launch of its new campaign approaches on November 3, 2024, Éduc’alcool reaffirms its mission to promote responsible drinking. For 35 years, the organization has leveraged its expertise and reputation to influence alcohol consumption behaviors while adapting to new realities.
In line with this commitment, Éduc’alcool has implemented an ambitious strategic plan to enhance its long-term impact, focusing on several key priorities:
- Adapt to new drinking habits and create impactful awareness campaigns.
- Strengthening the organization’s independence by stabilizing and diversifying funding sources to ensure the financial sustainability needed to achieve its goals.
- Hiring a dedicated scientific director to update and validate scientific content, ensuring it reflects the latest evidence-based research on alcohol consumption. This new position will also foster partnerships with medical associations to further support Éduc’alcool’s awareness mission.
With the credibility gained over the years comes the responsibility to continue evolving. Changes in drinking habits and scientific advancements urge the organization to maintain its active role while staying true to its mission of raising awareness and educating Quebecers.
Changing Behaviors, Evolving Initiatives
A Comprehensive Approach to Drinking and Driving
Éduc’alcool is neither an advocacy group nor a substitute for public or governmental authorities. However, the organization is frequently consulted on issues such as the 0.05% blood alcohol limit. While Éduc’alcool is not opposed to this reduction, it emphasizes that such a measure, if applied in isolation, could create a false sense of security. Instead, the organization advocates for a comprehensive approach that includes enhanced awareness programs, improved access to safe ride services—especially in remote areas—and strict enforcement of existing laws.
Éduc’alcool calls for constructive dialogue on this matter and will continue to collaborate with public authorities and the scientific community to promote effective policies.
Independence and Funding
Stabilizing and Diversifying Funding Sources
Contrary to popular belief, the SAQ does not directly fund Éduc’alcool’s operations. Instead, consumers indirectly contribute to the organization with each purchase of an alcoholic product, following the “consumer-pays” model. This mechanism allows Éduc’alcool to maintain its financial independence while ensuring stable funding.
The organization is also working to diversify its funding sources by partnering with both public and private entities. These efforts aim to strengthen its ability to run effective awareness campaigns, while remaining true to its mission in an ever-evolving context.
Renewed Governance
Call to Action
Since May 2024, Éduc’alcool has invited individuals and organizations to join its mission of promoting responsible consumption behaviors by becoming members. In this spirit, the organization is actively recruiting both individual and corporate members eager to get involved. Additionally, Éduc’alcool will soon begin the recruitment process for new board members to enhance the diversity and strength of its governance.
